3 Common Problems With Tankless Water Heaters
A tankless water heater is an increasingly popular option for homeowners looking to save on energy costs. Occasionally, you might experience problems with the heater. Before calling in a repair technician, here are some common problems and possible solutions you can try.
Water Is Not As Hot As Before
A common complaint about tankless water heaters if that the water is not always consistently hot. When this occurs, it is possible that there is an obstruction in the water flow that is causing the fluctuations in temperature. Check the shower heads and faucets to ensure they are not clogged. If so, clean and replace them.
It is also possible that changes to the groundwater temperature is impacting the water's temperature. Colder weather can lower the water's temperature. Although the water is still passing through the heating system, it is not getting as warm because it is starting from a colder temperature.
You can offset the colder temperatures by turning up the temperature on your water heater. You can turn it back down once the colder weather passes.
Water Heater Is Noisy
The burner in your water heater system can occasionally be noisy. In most instances, the noise fades quickly. In others, it can be ongoing and distracting.
If the problem persists, check out the fan. If it is clogged with debris, turn off the power to your water heater through the circuit breaker panels and clean the fan. You can use a brush to remove the debris.
If you have a gas-powered heater, look at the color of the flame from the burner. A blue flame indicates that the burner is operating efficiently. If it the flame is a different color, contact a repair technician immediately.
Burner Does Not Work
When the burner is not on, water is not being heated. The problem could be related to the flow of electricity or gas to the water heater. Check your energy source to ensure that it is on. If you are using electricity, check the circuit breaker panel to ensure the breaker for the heater is not switched to the "off" position. If so, flip it the opposite direction.
If you are using gas, ensure the gas valve leading to the heater is fully open. You should also check for leaks. Apply soapy water to the gas line connection point on the heater and ensure the gas valve is open. If you see bubbles, turn off the gas and call the technician.
Any other problems with your tankless water heater should be serviced by a professional water heater repair technician.
